(New York, NY) February 8, 2013—Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it will be distributing Omar Mullick and Bassam Tariq’s documentary THESE BIRDS WALK. The company began its involvement in the just-completed film while it was still in production – a new precedent and the earliest the company has ever come aboard a project – and they have set its world premiere for the True/False Film Festival in Columbia, Missouri, with screenings at South By Southwest immediately to follow. The film screened as a work-in-progress at last year’s edition of True/False to wide acclaim. O-scope will qualify the film for all major awards and release it theatrically later in the year.
THESE BIRDS WALK documents a runaway boy in Karachi, Pakistan as his life hangs on one critical question: where is home? The streets, an orphanage, or with the family he fled in the first place? Simultaneously heart-wrenching and life-affirming, the film captures the struggles of wayward street children and the samaritans looking out for them in an ethereal and inspirational story of resilience.
About the acquisition, O-scope’s Dan Berger and David Laub said, “From the moment we saw footage of this film, we knew it was something we had to be a part of. Omar and Bassam have taken us into a world we have never seen before, and have not only given us these incredibly compelling and emotionally rich stories, but have done so with beautiful, sophisticated craftsmanship.”
Filmmakers Omar Mullick and Bassan Tariq said, “Dan and David supported our film on the basis of a very early rough cut. This was something we could not have dreamt up as we chased runaways and dodged corruption in Pakistan to make a film. We’re honored to be included in the Oscilloscope family with some of the boldest films being pushed today.”
The film was produced by Mullick, Tariq, Valentina Canavesio, and Sonejuhi Sinha and executive produced by Berger and Laub from O-scope.
