OSCILLOSCOPE DEVELOPS ACNE, CHALLENGES AUTHORITY; Acquires North American Rights to TEENAGE / August 15th, 2013

Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired North American rights to TEENAGE , a hypnotic living collage on the genesis of youth culture from director Matt Wolf (Wild Combination: a Portrait of Arthur Russell). TEENAGE is a production of Cinereach (Beasts of the Southern Wild) and based on the best-selling book Teenage: The Pre-History of Youth Culture 1875-1945 by Jon Savage. The film had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and went on to screen at Hot Docs and AFI Docs (among others). O-Scope will continue a robust festival run prior to its 2014 release in theaters and across all other platforms.

Once, ‘Teenagers’ didn’t exist. But then, they were invented. With a changing tide the world over and a struggle erupting between adults and youth the Concept of a new generation took shape. Whether in America, England, or Germany, whether party-crazed Flappers or hip Swing Kids, zealous Nazi Youth or frenzied Sub-Debs, it didn’t matter – they were all a new idea of youth. They were all ‘Teenagers.’

“Mesmerizing…Wolf innovates a radically different format to create an intimate and personal history of an emerging demographic across four decades.” – Peter Debruge, Variety

TEENAGE is a living collage of rare archival material, filmed portraits, and voices (provided by Jena Malone, Ben Whishaw, Julia Hummer, Jessie Usher) lifted from early 20th century diary entries. Bradford Cox (Deerhunter, Atlas Sound) punctuates the narrative with a contemporary score.

“Passing before the screen like a dream, enhanced by the ambient swirl of Bradford Cox’s original soundtrack, the film stitches together an astounding collection…a stylish and clever end-run around the “Ken Burns effect.” – Steve Dollar, The Wall Street Journal

O-Scope’s Dan Berger and David Laub said, “TEENAGE is an incredibly unique, incredibly profound film about a subject as strange as it is relatable. Matt’s intelligent and nuanced handling of an inexhaustible wealth of material is a testament to his talent and precision as a filmmaker, and we all get to reap the benefits of that. ”

Matt Wolf said, “Oscilloscope thinks outside of the box with documentaries, and that’s where we want to be. I look forward to prolonging my adolescence with them.”

TEENAGE was produced by Ben Howe & Kyle Martin and executive produced by Philipp Engelhorn & Michael Raisler and Jason Schwartzman.
