(New York, NY) May 14, 2013—Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired U.S. rights to Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais’ WHITEWASH, which just had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival where it won the Best New Narrative Director Award. The darkly comic thriller, starring Thomas Haden Church, generated significant acclaim and buzz out of Tribeca. Oscilloscope will release the film theatrically and across all digital platforms.

In the film, Haden Church plays Bruce, a down-on-his-luck and recently unemployed plow operator in a small, snowy Canadian town. When Bruce accidentally kills a man In the midst of an angry rampage with his snowplow, he must deal with the consequences. Both intense and entertaining, WHITEWASH simultaneously explores the internalized guilt and frustration Bruce is harboring, and his external battle with the rugged wintry terrain he is faced with as he attempts to escape his situation. Hoss-Desmarais brilliantly juxtaposes Bruce’s increasingly fraught emotional state to the harshly beautiful winter of rural Quebec, and Haden Church carries the film with a completely unique performance that is raw, funny, and consistently engaging.

About the acquisition, David Laub and Dan Berger from Oscilloscope said, “We are thrilled to be bringing WHITEWASH to a wide audience. The film is an incredible discovery and a remarkable showcase of both the talent of first-time feature director Hoss-Desmarais and the performance of Thomas Haden Church, who is absolutely exceptional in a demanding and complex role. It’s exactly the kind of unique and special film we love to champion.”

Filmmaker Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais says, “It’s really exciting to join a cool team like Oscillloscope. It’s clear they’re motivated in releasing unique and innovating films. Now I just can’t wait for Americans to discover Thomas Haden Church’s performance.”

The film was produced by Luc Dery and Kim McCraw of micro_scope. The deal was negotiated by David Laub and Dan Berger of Oscilloscope with Charlotte Mickie of Entertainment One (eOne) on behalf of the filmmakers. Currently, eOne is actively selling the film in Cannes.

(New York, NY) April 24, 2013—Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired North American rights to Victor Quinaz’s debut feature, BREAKUP AT A WEDDING. A co-production of Zachary Quinto, Corey Moosa, and Neal Dodson’s Before The Door Pictures (MARGIN CALL, upcoming Cannes entry ALL IS LOST) and Anonymous Content (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, WINTER’S BONE), the film will be released on June 18th across all cable VOD and digital platforms, with select event screenings and a college tour leading up to the release

Seen through the lens of an ambitious wedding videographer (played by the director, Victor Quinaz), BREAKUP AT A WEDDING gives us the nuptials of Alison Jones (Alison Fyhrie) and Phil Havemeyer (Philip Quinaz, the director’s real-life younger brother) in all of its sprawling, messy, and often wildly inebriated glory. On the eve of their wedding, Alison gets cold feet and decides to break up with her fiancé Phil. But rather than face the embarrassment of calling off the ceremony, Alison suggests to Phil that they proceed with a sham wedding. Phil is more than game to try, secretly hoping that a surprise gift he has for Alison will ultimately change her mind.

BREAKUP AT A WEDDING was written and directed by Victor Quinaz. His then fiancé/now wife Anna Martemucci along with his brother Phillip Quinaz co- wrote the script and all three also appear in the cast of the ensemble feature. Quinaz and Martemucci said “We’re thrilled to be associated with a company we’ve long admired. Also honored that BREAKUP AT A WEDDING will have the distinction of being the Oscilloscope movie with the highest number of on-screen chocolate fountains.”

O-Scope’s David Laub and Dan Berger said, “BREAKUP AT A WEDDING perfectly captures the insanity surrounding most weddings and then amplifies it to the absurd and hysterical, yet somehow always manages to be both poignant and relatable. Victor and Anna are wonderfully talented and creative filmmakers and we’re delighted to be dipping into their chocolate fountain.”

Producer Zachary Quinto, further added, “Victor and Anna are innovative, articulate, and passionate about their ambitions, both creatively and professionally, and we are honored to bring their work to a larger audience”

BREAKUP AT A WEDDING is a PERIODS. film, directed by Victor Quinaz and written by Anna Martemucci, Victor Quinaz and Philip Quinaz. The film was a co-production with Scott Robinson’s Robinson Films, Inc. Quinaz and Martemucci are repped by United Talent Agency and Anonymous Content.

(New York, NY) March 25, 2013—Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired all North American rights to Lotfy Nathan’s debut feature, 12 O’CLOCK BOYS. The film is fresh off its world premiere at SXSW, where it played to enthusiastic audiences and garnered significant critical praise. It is next slated to screen at the Hot Docs and Full Frame Documentary Festivals, among others. O-Scope will continue to roll the film out to more festivals prior to its theatrical, DVD, and digital releases.

The 12 O’Clock Boys are a notorious urban dirt bike pack in Baltimore. Converging in groups and invading the streets, they dangerously–yet magnificently–make their presence known as they pop wheelies and weave in and out of traffic at excessive speeds, all the while taunting the police who must obey a self-imposed “no chase” rule for fear of endangering the public. Nathan frames the three-years-in-the-making narrative through the eyes of the adolescent Pug – a kid from the Westside eager to join the 12 O’Clock Boys’ ranks. Pug reveres the Boys’ every move, and Nathan follows this young man through some of the most pivotal years of his life, providing a compelling and intimate personal story within the broader depiction of the wild, dynamic world of the 12 O’Clock Boys.

Dan Berger of Oscilloscope said, “In 12 O’CLOCK, Lotfy has introduced us to a world so compelling, so foreign, and so relatable all at once. It’s a portrait of a subculture as much as a window into the state of America, and it’s all in the guise of THE WIRE by way of CIRQUE DU SOLEIL. It’s seriously like nothing you’ve seen before.”

Filmmaker Lotfy Nathan said, “Oscilloscope’s great. I really hope they don’t f*&k this up.”

The film was both directed and produced by Lotfy Nathan. The deal was negotiated by Dan Berger and David Laub of Oscilloscope with ICM Partners and Marc H. Simon of Cowan DeBaets Abrahams & Sheppard LLP on behalf of the filmmakers.

HEY HEY HEY,

Much abuzz at the labs as of late, but we thought it important to take a minute to update you all about recent O-Scope happenings.

I.) IT’S A DISASTER Now Available on Demand and Digital!

Following our hyper-experimental pre-pre-release on Vine a few weeks back (for which I was sent on two weeks’ paid leave because it was too hyper-experimental), we’ve released our brand new, piping hot Apocalyptic comedy IT’S A DISASTER on demand and digital before it hits theaters.

We’ll be releasing the film in theaters across the country Friday, April 12th (and there’ll be a bunch of fun cast & crew Q&As and appearances, so stay tuned to the film’s Facebook and Twitter), you can catch the movie on your on demand & digital platforms like iTunes.

II.) Matteo Garrone’s REALITY hits theaters March 15th

REALITY, the new film by the incredible Italian auteur Matteo Garrone (who directed the critically-acclaimed crime drama GOMORRAH in 2008), is coming to theaters this month.

It’s the story of a charming and humble fishmonger (yes, a fishmonger) in Naples who becomes fixated on being a contestant on the reality show “Big Brother” (yes, that Big Brother!), leading him down a rabbit hole of skewed perceptions and paranoia. So far, critics have drawn comparisons to Fellini, Buñuel, and Scorsese’s “The King of Comedy” (one of our all-time faves) and Garrone himself describes the film as a “dark fairytale.”

Check out our trailer and find a theater near you right here:

http://oscilloscope.net/reality/

III.) WELCOME TO PINE HILL Continues in NYC

In other O-Scope theatrical news, we just opened Keith Miller’s Slamdance-winning film WELCOME TO PINE HILL at the IFC Center here in Manhattan to a nearly sold-out weekend. The film will continue through this week and then on select showtimes next week, so catch it while you can!

For tickets and showtimes:

http://www.ifccenter.com/films/welcome-to-pine-hill/

IV.) That goat we promised…

We love short films at O-Scope. Some shorts are bite-size stories you can’t forget, and we loved this two-minute beauty (the best two-minute film!) at the recent True/False Film Festival…

So without further ado, here’s TINA DELIVERS A GOAT:

https://vimeo.com/54677788

Director Joe Callander said, “The problem with short films is, they’re too long.”

We really look forward to Joe’s next film, TINA’S EX HUSBAND FALLS OFF A ZIPLINE. We hear it’s pretty riveting.

Forever yours (and anyone else who will have me),

(New York, NY) February 27, 2013—Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired North American rights to Bryan Wizemann’s ABOUT SUNNY, which stars Lauren Ambrose (SIX FEET UNDER, SLEEPWALK WITH ME) in a role that earned her widespread acclaim and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Actress. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (under the title THINK OF ME), and has since gone on to play other esteemed festivals such as The Hamptons International Film Festival, The Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and the Independent Film Festival of Boston, where it won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature. O-Scope will release the film on Cable VOD and all digital platforms on March 19th.

“Ambrose is on-screen for virtually every second, emanating a gorgeous, doomed charisma, and holds you in suspense the whole way…it’s a worthwhile recession-era drama built around a terrific performance.”
- Andrew O’Hehir, Salon

ABOUT SUNNY is a suspenseful drama about Angela, a struggling, single mother in Las Vegas who is trying to hold her life together for her daughter Sunny. As her life spirals out of control, Angela finally reaches a breaking point and is faced with an impossible choice: can she give up what she loves most for the promise of a better life for Sunny? An emotionally gripping character piece that shows us Angela’s heart-wrenching dilemma with both immediacy and compassion, ABOUT SUNNY is moving and deeply resonant, and features a career-defining performance from Ambrose which has already garnered significant critical acclaim by many top-tier critics.

“The sensitive and versatile Lauren Ambrose is positively devastating in ABOUT SUNNY… She is heartbreaking without a shred of self-pity, and ABOUT SUNNY is a sad, wrenching but admirably unsentimental film about the bravery of the human condition.”
- Rex Reed, New York Observer

ABOUT SUNNY co-stars Dylan Baker (2 DAYS IN NEW YORK, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, HAPPINESS), Penelope Ann Miller (THE ARTIST, CARLITO’S WAY), and introduces Audrey Scott as “Sunny.” The film was produced by Mike S. Ryan, Blythe Robertson, and Ambrose and co-produced by Alicia Van Couvering. Executive producers are Brent Stiefel of Votiv Films and Peter C. Selig.

(New York, NY) February 20, 2013—Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it will no longer be distributing feature films via Vine, “a new mobile service that lets you create and share beautiful, short looping videos.” Vine (which was recently acquired by Twitter), launched on January 24th and has quickly become one of the most popular apps in the iTunes App Store. O-Scope, in an unprecedented move, shocked the industry and the nation when they released their upcoming video-on-demand, digital, and theatrical title IT’S A DISASTER on Vine yesterday in hundreds of six second segments.

Always with an eye on groundbreaking initiatives, Oscilloscope’s Minister of Informative Updates, Bruce Farnsworth, said about the failed venture, “From the moment it launched just three short weeks ago, we thought that six-second loops of video, edited in-phone, and posted in real time was and will be the future of film distribution. We were wrong. We were very, very wrong.”

The groundbreaking and trend-setting initiative, which will likely not result in any trends, crashed and burned shortly after its initiation. Oscilloscope, still plans a March 5th digital and VOD release and an April 12th theatrical bow, as was initially planned.

“My bad,” apologetically added Farnsworth. He is now on temporary (paid) administrative leave.

Never ones to shy away from the unknown, Oscilloscope will continue to work on distributing films in all media and by all means and methods now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity. They continue to acquire distribution rights for the previously unexploited territory of The Moon.

(New York, NY) February 19, 2013—Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it will be the first film distribution company to undertake feature film releasing via Vine, “a new mobile service that lets you create and share beautiful, short looping videos.” Vine (which was recently acquired by Twitter), launched on January 24th and has quickly become one of the most popular apps in the iTunes App Store.

Always with an eye on groundbreaking initiatives, Oscilloscope’s Minister of Informative Updates, Bruce Farnsworth, said about the venture, “From the moment it launched just three short weeks ago, it was so clear to us that six-second loops of video, edited in-phone, and posted in real time was and will be the future of film distribution. While we still endeavor to release films via some other methods, we didn’t want to be left out in the cold and we are proud to be an early adopter of tomorrow, early.”

The groundbreaking and trend-setting initiative will kick off with Todd Berger’s Doomsday comedy, IT’S A DISASTER, starring David Cross, Julia Stiles, and America Ferrera. Oscilloscope, which planned a March 5th digital and VOD release and an April 12th theatrical bow, has since bolstered that schedule with the addition of a Vine release today, at 4:30pm –ish EST. The digital/VOD and theatrical dates remain unchanged.

Starting at 4:30pm-ish EST, you can watch IT’S A DISASTER on Oscilloscope Laboratories’ Vine account, or via their twitter:

http://twitter.com/oscopelabs/

Todd Berger commented, “Jean-Luc Godard once said that he pities French cinema because it has no money and American cinema because it has no ideas. Well this is certainly an idea.”

Never one to shy away from the unknown, Oscilloscope is currently working on distributing films in all media and by all means and methods now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity. The future is now. We will also be actively acquiring distribution rights for the previously unexploited territory of The Moon.

(New York, NY) February 15, 2013—Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired North American rights to Martha Shane’s and Lana Wilson’s directorial debut AFTER TILLER. The film premiered last month at the Sundance Film Festival to universal acclaim. It is scheduled to screen next at True/False Film Festival in Columbia, Missouri. O-scope plans a nationwide theatrical release for the film followed by video-on-demand, digital, and home entertainment formats.

AFTER TILLER intimately explores the highly controversial subject of third-trimester abortions in the wake of the 2009 assassination of practitioner Dr. George Tiller. The procedure is now performed by only four doctors in the United States, all former colleagues of Dr. Tiller, who risk their lives every day in the name of their unwavering commitment toward their patients.

O-Scope’s Dan Berger and David Laub said, “Martha and Lana have created a moving and unique exploration of one of the most incendiary topics of our time, and they’ve done so in an informative, thought-provoking, and compassionate way. We were so impressed with their ability to present such a controversial issue with such respect and complexity, allowing the film to resonate equally for people both for and against the procedure.”

The filmmakers, Martha Shane and Lana Wilson said, “We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Oscilloscope, and look forward to launching the film with them. We made AFTER TILLER to shed more light, rather than more heat, on this issue, and know that Oscilloscope’s smart, sensitive approach will get it out to the widest audience possible.”

The film was written by Shane, Wilson, and Greg O’Toole and produced by Shane and Wilson. David Laub and Dan Berger of O-scope negotiated the deal with Cinetic Media on behalf of the filmmakers.
