It’s December at O-Scope Labs / December 4th, 2012

Seasons greetings,

It’s been a whirlwind year for us at the ‘Scope, and though we’re well into December now, we ain’t done yet.  In fact, we’ve got a slew of O-Scope tidings for y’all, so we’re just going to hop right into it:

1)  ONLY THE YOUNG and TCHOUPITOULAS open New York this Friday, Dec 7th. Nationwide releases to follow.

Our last theatrical releases of the year will be two award-winning docs, Jason Tippet and Elizabeth Mims’ coming-of-age chronicle ONLY THE YOUNG and the Ross Brothers hallucinatory love letter to New Orleans, TCHOUPITOULAS.  We really love these docs, and believe that the Ross Bros and Tippet/Mims represent a new generation of young, talented filmmakers.

Both will begin their theatrical run at IFC Center in New York City this Friday.  Having a great opening weekend will help us get these indies in more theaters across the country, so please come out and support indie film!

2)  Help Kickstart a masterclass with famed auteur Nicholas Ray

Hot on the heels of our release of Nicholas Ray’s last film WE CAN’T GO HOME AGAIN and companion documentary DON’T EXPECT TOO MUCH, filmmaker Susan Ray is working on her third Ray-related film project in honor of Ray’s 100th birthday.

This new film, ACTION!, can be seen as a cinematic masterclass with the legendary director (whose credits include REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, IN A LONELY PLACE, and other Hollywood classics) – he’ll walk you through his various productions, the craft of filmmaking, and his philosophy on life.

Susan and the Ray Foundation are currently raising funds for the film on Kickstarter which will help cover production and licensing fees for clips from Nick’s studio movies.  You could receive a number of awesome rewards, including signed WE CAN’T GO HOME AGAIN Blu-rays/DVDs, books on Nicholas Ray, and even Nicholas Ray’s infamous red jacket!

Please contribute and help bring this unique masterclass to life:

3)  Digital & DVD Releases:  DYING TO DO LETTERMAN, HELLO I MUST BE GOING, and BROOKLYN BROTHERS BEAT THE BEST

In the digital and home video realm, we’ve got a bunch of new releases hitting in the next few weeks:

Our cancer & stand-up comedy (yes, both) documentary DYING TO DO LETTERMAN is now available on demand and digital – http://ow.ly/fNe6V

Todd Louiso’s lovely HELLO I MUST BE GOING will be available on demand & digital December 18th, and our next DVD release, BROOKLYN BROTHERS BEAT THE BEST, hits shelves January 8th.

4)  Smashin’ Records, Takin’ Names: SAMSARA breaks $2.5 million in the box office

Continuing its theatrical run since the summer, SAMSARA continues to raise the bar by breaking $2.5 million at the box office, one of the top grossing documentaries of the year!  For those of you who haven’t seen it, this is definitely one to catch on the big screen, so see it while you can:

And while we’re braggin’, we just noticed that four O-Scope films rank amongst PBS’ list of the 100 best documentaries of all time.

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP – #10
DARK DAYS – #71
DEAR ZACHARY – #74
IF A TREE FALLS – #92

Not bad, eh?  Here’s the full list:

5)  THE CIRCLE OF TRUST: A great gift for the cinephile in you (or your family)

And lastly but not leastly, we want to remind all of you holiday gift-givers that Oscilloscope’s much-coveted Blu-ray & DVD subscription service, THE CIRCLE OF TRUST, makes a great gift for cinephiles and cool stuff aficionados.

For only $99, you can give them our next 10 releases sent straight to their mailbox at least one week before street date, in addition to discounted back catalog titles and O-Scope Stream-O-Vision movies, and other various perks.

So jump in the circle (or toss in a friend) this holiday season!

Anyway, that’s it for our (admittedly lengthy) O-Scope update.
