OSCILLOSCOPE’S GOT SOUL; ACQUIRES SOUL OF A BANQUET / January 10th, 2014

Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired worldwide rights to Wayne Wang’s documentary SOUL OF A BANQUET, currently in production. The film, which had a special work-in-progress benefit screening in 2013 at the San Francisco Film Society, will premiere later in 2014.

Director Wayne Wang (THE JOY LUCK CLUB) takes us into the world of Cecilia Chiang, the woman who introduced America to authentic Chinese food. Chiang opened her internationally renowned restaurant The Mandarin in 1961 in San Francisco and went on to change the course of cuisine in America. The film is equal parts a delectable showcase of gastronomy and a touching portrait of Chiang’s journey from a childhood in Beijing before the Cultural Revolution to accidental restaurateur on the west coast of the United States. SOUL OF A BANQUET features interviews with Alice Waters, Ruth Reichl, and Cecilia Chiang herself.

Wayne Wang is the director of more than 20 films that bring a literate and eclectic sensibility to stories about globalization. His directing credits include THE JOY LUCK CLUB, MAID IN MANHATTAN and A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS.

About the acquisition, O-scope’s Dan Berger and David Laub said, “We’re absolutely thrilled to be able to bring Wayne’s deeply touching and wonderfully delicious portrait to audiences. It’s a late Christmas gift to O-Scope – and what better way for two Jewish boys to celebrate Christmas than with Chinese food?”

Filmmaker Wayne Wang said, “Cecilia not only changed the face of American cuisine when she opened the Mandarin, she also made the very best potstickers when I arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong. I’m looking forward to partnering with Oscilloscope to introduce Cecilia’s story and her sumptuous cooking to a new generation of foodies.”

SOUL OF A BANQUET was produced by Wang, Richard Wong and Jonathan Bing.

OSCILLOSCOPE TAKES AIM AT “TIM AND SUSAN HAVE MATCHING HANDGUNS” / December 17th, 2013

Oscilloscope Laboratories and leather goods purveyor Saddleback Leather are pleased to announce that Oscilloscope has acquired North American rights to Joe Callander’s short film TIM AND SUSAN HAVE MATCHING HANDGUNS. The film will have its world premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival next month.

Clocking in at a robust 95 seconds, TIM AND SUSAN is a romantic tale of love, life, and the right to bear arms.

About the acquisition, O-Scope’s Dan Berger and David Laub said, “TIM AND SUSAN is a remarkably assured, economical, and entertaining film. Joe’s deft filmmaking and Tim and Susan’s undeniable connection will warm the cockles of your heart. We’re gonna figure out a way to put this film in front of your faces.”

Filmmaker Joe Callander said, “I’ve been watching Oscilloscope films for years and it’s quite the unexpected honor to be working with them on this short. My first film was two minutes long, this one is 95 seconds. I’m hoping that if this trend continues, one day I’ll just wake up, sneeze, and everything will become pure light.”

TIM AND SUSAN was produced by Dave Munson and Saddleback Leather, purveyors of fine leather goods and fine films. Joe Callander is Saddleback Leather’s filmmaker in residence.

A)  THESE BIRDS WALK opens New York TOMORROW at the Village East Cinema

We’re super stoked to be releasing our friends Omar Mullick and Bassam Tariq’s THESE BIRDS WALK, a powerfully cinematic look at modern day Karachi and young Pakistani runaways.

The movie’s received tons of goodwill and praise in its pre-theatrical festival run — with comparisons to the 400 Blows and Terrence Malick & Michael Haneke.

It’s even sparked some discussion about how documentaries should be viewed by film critics and the filmgoing population at large:

Check out the trailer here (which features a track by one of our favorite bands, The Antlers).

C)  OUR DAY WILL COME – redheaded roadtrip turned twisted sojourn for solidarity NOW AVAILABLE ON DIGITAL PLATFORMS!

Also new from those crazy kids at O-Scope: Romain Gavras’ incredible debut feature OUR DAY WILL COME, starring Vincent Cassel & Olivier Barthelemy as two disaffected redheads on the run.

Fans of Gavras’ now-classic music videos for Jay-Z & Kanye West’s “No Church In The Wild” and M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” and “Born Free” are sure to enjoy this trip.

Perhaps Entertainment Weekly put it best:

“A darkly comic satire… a picaresque and extremely bizarre tale of drinking, nudity, violence, carjacking, jacuzzi-despoiling, impetuous hair removal, and general insanity.”

We dig it, and we think you’ll dig it too.  Watch it on iTunes & Digital Platforms now!

OSCILLOSCOPE LABORATORIES AND ROMAIN GAVRAS CONSPIRE; VOW: “OUR DAY WILL COME” / September 24th, 2013

Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired U.S. rights to OUR DAY WILL COME (“Notre jour viendra”), Romain Gavras’ hallucinatory debut feature starring Vincent Cassel and Olivier Barthélémy. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. O-Scope will release across all digital platforms on October 22nd.

In OUR DAY WILL COME, two outcast redheads – a bullied teen and a psychologist – embark on a journey to Ireland, where they believe the color of their hair will be embraced. What begins as a quest for freedom gradually descends into a rampage of violence and destruction. With an assured filmmaking style previously displayed in his music videos (“No Church in the Wild” – Jay Z & Kanye West; “Bad Girls” – M.I.A., to name just a few), OUR DAY WILL COME marks the emergence of a major new auteur.

When asked for a quote, O-Scope’s Dan Berger and David Laub registered confusion and said, “I thought ‘Notre jour viendra’ translated to ‘White House Down.’ Our Day Will what?…”

Romain Gavras said, “Oscilloscope let me know that after their negotiations for WHITE HOUSE DOWN fell through, my film would be the biggest blockbuster they distribute this year. I’m very proud of that.”
